Seas The Day

Heritage Lottery Fund
The small town of Selsey, West Sussex has a fishing heritage dating back hundreds of years.

In recent times, fishing is being negatively affected all over British coastlines. Selsey is no different. However, the pride and strength of the Selsey fisherman is such that they have continued to sustainably fish the waters and today, their specialism of fresh crab and lobster is a delicacy and famous across the south of England.

The Brief

Continuing our successful record with the Heritage Lottery Fund.

We were commissioned by Chichester District Council, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to produce a short film that tells their story. In meeting the fishing community, we learned of the importance fishing has to Selsey and the pride the residents have towards the fishermen and their families.

Mentoring Young Filmmakers

We worked with a group of young people to train them in filmmaking skills as part of this project
As part of the documentary creation, we worked with three young people from Selsey and trained them in filmmaking technical and research skills. The young people assisted with the filming of all the interviews and also gained accreditation through Arts Award.

Out at sea

To capture the best footage we joined an early morning fishing trawler.

Our camera operators, Ben and Joe (drone) joined the crew of fishermen and captured first hand footage of the process.

Working with Millstream has been an absolute pleasure. The film was made with minimum fuss, maximum professionalism, and the end result is stunning. Millstream also advised on other aspects of the Sea’s the Day project that enabled two of Selsey Town’s young people gain a Bronze Arts Award. Their contribution helped enhance the fantastic project that it is.
