Student-centred learning

Inspiring the next generation

We know that giving young people the opportunity to work on projects and gain real world experience can boost their self esteem and equip them with the skills and confidence to embark on the next stage of their journey.

The appetite from educators is bigger than ever to help fill the gaps in the National Curriculum and we’re proud to offer work experience so young people can learn client-facing, practical filmmaking skills and receive training in technical skills using broadcast standard equipment.

Most importantly, we’re mentoring young people and raising their horizons as to what a career in the creative industries could bring while building their confidence and self-esteem through transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership and project management.

Gaining real-world experience

Young people have always been at the heart of Millstream. We understand the education system and youth support having worked in it ourselves. Our project-based learning approach is bespoke and we work with FE colleges, schools at Key Stage 3 and 4, youth organisations and young people not in education, employment or training (NEET).

We offer opportunities to gain practical work experience or work on project-based learning schemes which are vital to the students’ development. We listen to your needs and design an offering that best fits your requirements.

Whatever their background or prior experiences, young people need to feel nurtured and supported while being encouraged to be the best version of themselves. Some of the young people we trained and mentored on project-based learning projects now work for us.

Excited young people, some with fists raised, celebrating in a rustic hall.

The impact

Young people working with us thrive through the responsibility they are given. We ensure projects are co-created and youth driven. We train and mentor young people in all aspects of film production and they produce a video they are really proud of.

However, the final film is just a vehicle to challenge them in areas across the curriculum. Educators tell us they’ve observed a significant and sustained impact upon speaking and listening and writing skills from their students after working with us.

Behind the scenes with students from The Academy, Selsey

Students from The Academy, Selsey in West Sussex worked with our team to produce a documentary titled Selsey Pavilion - The Journey So Far. Watch the behind the scenes video, hear from those involved in the project and the impact it’s had on the students.

Working with Millstream Productions was a fantastic experience. It was incredibly important to me from the very beginning that the film project would be run by the students, not for them. Dan and the team had such a belief in our young people and gave them the confidence and freedom to lead.
